Bitexco Financial Tower – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Location: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Completed: 2010

AE Interests:

Essentially an all-concrete structure with composite perimeter columns and concrete core walls. Office floors framed with reinforced concrete flat plate system. Poor soil conditions due to proximity to the Saigon River and the Mekong Delta; very long foundation piers (265ft). Perimeter tapers inward at lower 20 floors, limiting width and resistance to building sway. Structural design uses concrete outriggers and belt trusses are used to stiffen tower against swaying motion. 16 elevators.

Helipad cantilevered out on 52nd floor. Steel girder and beam system used because most economical. Almost the size of the 52nd floor itself.

DC Towers I + II – Vienna, Austria

AE Interest: elevated slab of the Donau-City is continued; large terrace provides direct access to the Neue Donau river; two towers are treated as two halves of a block; folds in the facade appear malleable making the building look liquid in some lights

Notes: Construction of Tower I (60 stories) was complete in 2013 and Tower II (44 stories) should begin soon; tallest towers in Austria

Notes: 103 stories; won 2012 RIBA Lubetkin Prize presented to the best new building outside the EU; contains offices, a conference center, retail, apartments, hotel, and sightseeing spaces at the top


Busan Lotte Town Tower – Busan, South Korea

AE Interest: located on a peninsula between two bridges; use of a “Y” shaped buttress minimizes material usage and maximizes load resistance allowing different column layouts in all 4 tiers; 24 hour pedestrian walkway around base; will house retail, offices, residential, hotel and a rooftop observation deck

Notes: 107 floors; to allow for tenant custom improvements, office spaces will have open floor plates

White Tree (L’Arbre Blanc) – Montpellier, France

AE Interest: Aims to connect the old and new districts of Motpellier; designed to look like a tree to follow city’s theme of outdoor living; feeds off of local natural resources (units are passively cooled; solar fireplaces); contains residences, a common area, office buildings, a bar with a view and an art gallery with the intent that everyone in the city will find use in the building

Notes: Won the “Architectural Folie of the 21st Century” competition; 17 stories tall

Clearpoint Tower – Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka

AE Interest:

Will be the tallest vertical garden in the world; exterior of the building consists of planted terraces that block all exterior glass from direct sunlight to minimize solar heat gain; terraces are complete with an automatic drip irrigation system and the plants will act as sound and heat buffers, providing cleaner air to the apartments and also allowing natural ventilation to reduce air conditioning systems to a minimum.

Notes: 164 spacious apartments spread over 46 floors overlooking the Diyawanna Lake in Kotte and less than 10km from the largest city in Sri Lanka, Colombo.
