Trädgår’n Restaurant – Göteborg, Sweden
Building: Trädgår’n Restaurant
Location: Göteborg, Sweden
Completion Date: 1998
Architect: Studio Gron
Landscape Architect: Snøhetta
AE Interests: relatively massive two-story building against the road to provide a sound and pollution barrier, The objective was to form a veranda along the whole of this wall (and projecting beyond its ends). Only 3.5m wide, the veranda does not seem at pinched, for its inner wall is glass, and the outer one is an open rectangular lattice screen.
Icehotel – Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Building: Icehotel
Location: Jukkasjärvi, Sweden
Completed: since 1994
Architect: Ake Larsson
AE Interests: uses all snow from the nearby Torne River, then the snow is sprayed on huge steel frames and allowed to freeze. After a couple of days, the forms are removed, leaving a maze of free-standing corridors of snow. The hotel is built with snice (has a snow-like appearance but ice-like physical characteristics), which takes the place of mortar in a traditional brick-built hotel.
