Location: Potsdam, Germany
Architect: Erich Mendelsohn
Completion: 1921

AE Interests: reinforced concrete creates a sculptural appearance with smooth, rounded, curvilinear forms instead of angles; material changed to brick covered with stucco from post-war shortages leading to cracking and dampness; example of Expressionism;  one of the few connections between science and art

AE Interests: sharp bow of the bathroom and use of durable timber deflect winds; precast concrete piles counteract sand movement; exterior double-skin envelope insulated with recycled water bottle fibers; revolutionary timber nailing system; panels and shipping containers prefabricated offsite; approx. zero environmental impact
