AE Interests: Lab and office facility that obtained LEED Gold certification and uses 1/3 of  the energy used in a typical laboratory facility, annual energy costs lowered by $150,000-200,000 [a], pervious concrete in the parking lot to collect drainage from the roof and condensate from AHUs (rainwater storage system) [a], aluminum brise-soleil to allow transparency while still blocking summer solar gains (reflecting traditional use of shutters and screens in New Orleans) [a,b], double-glazed glass in conference rooms with direct access to courtyard to create civic presence and green spaces within NOBIC [b], incorporation of local artists by including recycled glass art pieces in murals throughout the building [c], “Resiliency in Design” [c].

Purpose: Fourth International Solar Cities Conference in 2010 – Hotel, exhibition centers, research facilities, meeting rooms, and convention spaces

AE Interests: Located in Solar Valley’ (98% of energy is derived from solar power)[a]; building inspired by the sun dial [b], one of the world’s largest solar-powered structures and the world’s largest solar office building; 5,000 m2 of solar panels and more than 30 types of green building technologies (photovoltaic grid-connected power generation, photovoltaic sun shades, ceiling radiation heating refrigeration, rainwater collection) [c,d]; 88% energy cost savings; curtain walls, windows, and doors have special features that convert light into electricity [e].
