Area: 127,014 sq ft
Architects: Safdie Arquitects
Executive Architect: Uribe & Schwarzkopf
Collaborators: Uribe & Schwarzkopf
Structural Engineer: Arup., Fernando Romo

AE Interest:

“On a prime corner site overlooking La Carolina Park in Quito, the 24-story tower features vertically stacked dwellings with units staggered in and out. The fractalized tower profile creates generous landscaped terraces on each level, with operable glass walls that merge indoor and outdoor living to take full advantage of Quito’s year-round temperate weather.”

“The building profile steps back to reveal a “hill side” of terraces, and also steps forward to create a “cliff face”. The arrangement in section of projecting terraces provides natural shading from the sun. As the building steps in and out, generous double height landscaped terraces are created on each level.”

AE Interest:

“Aquarela includes nine residential stone-cladded blocks. Ateliers Jean Nouvel imagined an approach that could mimic the context, with curved balconies wrapping the intervention, overfilled with greenery. These rocky gardens connect the residents to the natural outdoors and strengthen the integration of the building.”
