Building: Arab World Institute (Institut du Monde Arabe)
Location: 1 Rue des Fossés Saint-Bernard, 75005 Paris, France
Cost: $47.5 million
Architect: Jean Nouvel
Completed 1987

AE Interests: Aga Khan Award for Architecture; this building started Jean Nouvel’s acclaim. A matrix of photosensitive, mechanical apertures open and close throughout the day to control the light level inside the building. Steel structure, custom exposed elevators. Shading, daylighting, cultural expression. `
