Building: Habitat Qinhuangdao
Location: Qinhuangdao, China (on the coast of the Bohai Sea, 200 miles east of Beijing)
Completed: 2018
Purpose: high-density residential community
Size: 4,800,000 sf complex (includes 2500 residential units & 60,000 sf of retail space)
Architect: Safdie Architects (Somerville, Massachusetts, United States)
Local Design Institute: East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd.
Façade: Konstruct West Partners, Zhejiang Zhongnan Holdings Group
Landscape: SWA Group & Ager Group
Lighting: Lam Partners & Brandston Partnership Inc.
Awards: MIPIM Asia Best Chinese Futura Mega Project Gold Award (2013)

AE Interests: affordable housing, organized into a series of linked mini blocks of 16 stories each, responds to the beachfront site & local zoning ordinance that requires every unit receive > 3 hours of sunlight daily, private green spaces, terraces, skylights, solariums, roof decks, humanizing the megascale (maintaining basic human necessities that are lost in most urban designs), exterior circulation systems include internal communal streets & covered skywalks
