UCCA Dune Art Museum – Qinhuangdao, China
Building: UCCA Dune Art Museum
Location: Qinhuangdao, China
Architect: OPEN Architecture
Structural Engineer: CABR Technology
Lighting Design: X Studio, School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, China
Completed: 2018
AEInterests: The museum gets its name from the sea dunes which it was integrated into.In collaboration with the School Of Architecture, Tsinghua University, China for lighting design, the concrete cavities that make up ten underground galleries and a cafe are connected to the outside world by skylights and glass curtain walls oriented towards the sea. The concrete shell was hand shaped onto a wooden strip framework and left in its irregular texture to inform viewers of its construction process. By placing the museum underneath the dunes, there is no need for an air conditioning system due to the sand’s thermal protection. Instead there is only a zero-emission heating system for the winter.
